KITEL 2009: presenting new opportunities

The Central Asian International Exhibition of Telecommunications and Computer Technologies, KITEL, has long ago become an awaited-for event in the telecom market. Experts have specific expectations from the exhibition as it serves as a professional venue to discuss the latest achievements in the IT area and communication technologies. It is the exhibition that allows to realise how advanced the local and foreign communication and telecom markets are, and to map out the basic trends and market development areas for the previous year
KITEL 2009 was no exception. This year’s exhibition, organised by the Kazakhstan exhibition company Iteca and its international partners ITE Group Plc (UK) and ITE Moscow (Russia), presented 60 companies from 10 countries: China, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and United States. The exhibition enjoyed the attention from government bodies and business circles of Kazakhstan and specialised associations.

“The International Exhibition of Telecommunications, Computer and Information Technologies, KITEL 2009, is a landmark event for our country and the international telecom community,” said Yerlan Durmagambetov, Deputy Chair of the Kazakhstan Agency for Information and Communication, at the exhibition opening. “Current social development is now entering an epoch of formation of a whole new information society, or knowledge-based society. In this respect, KITEL 2009 allows to learn about new achievements, carry out cooperation and partnership and focus on developing and distributing new technologies.”

Traditionally, the exhibition combines several important topics:
Telecommunications and Computer Technologies – KITEL, TV and Radio Broadcasting and Broadband Communication Networks – TRBK, Software and Automation – Software Showcase, and Banking Technologies, Equipment and Services – BankTech.

Exhibits by KazakhTelecom JSC, Kazakhstan’s leading communication operator, were very interesting.

“At the exhibition, we offer new services,” said Askar Yeskerkegenov, Chief Commercial Director of KazakhTelecom JSC. “These include digital interactive television services under the ID TV brand. We also provide wireless broadband 3G Internet services based on the CDMA standard, as well as IP-based SIP telephony services.”

According to him, interactive digital television has already been working in Astana since mid-February 2009. By the end of the year, six more cities in Kazakhstan will have been covered, too. This service is interesting because it includes additional services apart from the traditional television package – for example, deferred view, virtual cinema, etc. To enable the service, one needs a special add-on device –Set-to-box – and broadband Internet access (Megaline by KazakhTelecom JSC).

Research developments in the area of visualisation were presented by Samat Show Technics.

“Samat Show Technics is a system integrator in the area of interactive technologies and audiovisual systems,” said Rustam Musin, CEO. “It is a whole range of services for conference halls, simultaneous translation systems, electronic voting systems, audio and video visualisation systems, video panels, and interactive boards.

“At KITEL 2009, we present the latest technology – a seamless plasma video panel that can be used for indoor presentations – for example, situation centres and various operations control centres. To date, this technology is one of the best ones.”

An exposition by the Russian company General DataComm was one of the most extensive ones.

“Our company designs, manufactures and supplies telecom equipment to the markets of Russia and Kazakhstan,” says Dmitriy Khitsko, Key Client Manager. “We supply several equipment lines: radio relay links, passive optical network equipment, digital television (IP TV) solutions, various user add-ons, ADSL modems, IP telephones, etc.

“We are interested in the CIS market for many reasons. We believe that the Kazakhstan market is a very promising one. Our main interests are mobile and fixed communication operators. Companies involved in the oil and gas industry and power engineering are also of interest. The core product line includes radio relay equipment which has historically been offered for a long time – more than five years.”

This year, the exhibition format has changed: apart from KITEL 2009 proper, two conferences have been held. On 27 May, the second conference Digital Broadcasting: Technical Revolution and Public Interest was organised by the Kazakhstan National Association of TV and Radio Broadcasters jointly with Iteca. During the exhibition, Software Engineering Summit 2009 brought together prominent business figures and government officials interested in the development of this IT sector.

According to the organisers, specialised workshops and presentations proved to be an interesting enhancement for the exhibition agenda. “The number of exhibiting companies is illustratory,” said Yuri Borodikhin, Iteca’s Executive Director. “It is great to see that most companies – despite the world economic crisis – realise the importance of such events and take an active part in them. It is important because new links and projects, an exchange of innovative technologies and expertise will eventually help overcome the crisis.”

Undoubtedly, the crisis has somewhat affected the telecom and IT market. In this respect, the 16th Central Asian International Exhibition of Telecommunications and Computer Technologies – KITEL 2009 – has become a litmus test of the market development, its sustainability and capacity in overcoming the bad times for the telecom market. Based on the KITEL 2009 results, the situation is quite vincible. Local companies did not lose heart but are rather looking for new ways to develop and offering innovative solutions and products thus providing incentives for the market development.

The next KITEL will take place in Almaty on 25-27 May 2010.
